From Unschooling to University
How a life without tests prepared me for the most rigorous exams.
The most common fear parents have about unschooling is that their child will be "closed off" from higher education. I am living proof that the opposite is true.
I never took a standardized test until I was 17. I never navigated a syllabus until I entered my first community college class. But because I had spent 15 years learning how to learn, I found the transition surprisingly easy.
While my peers were struggling with the sudden lack of parental supervision in college, I found the autonomy of university life incredibly familiar. I knew how to manage my time, how to research a subject, and most importantly, how to ask for help when I was stuck.
Curiosity is a muscle. If you use it every day, it becomes strong enough to lift any curriculum.
I graduated with honors, not because I was "smart," but because I was engaged. I wasn't there to get a grade; I was there to acquire the knowledge I needed for the life I wanted to build.
